Does short termism affect the quality of urban design in the UK?

This paper follows the report on the “Quality of Urban Design: Study of the Influence of Private Property Decision Maker in Urban Design” (RICS 1996). It focuses on one of the findings in the report, namely that decisions made in development, investment and occupation seemed overly influenced by short term considerations. In this paper, the authors review the Report and examine the concept of short termism as it affects urban design decisions. The paper concludes that although it is difficult to establish whether or not short termism exists in many decisions, there are grounds for believing that a priori short termism might particularly influence property orientated decisions. The paper ends with some implications for policy both at the economy and local level

Creating Peace through Peace Journalism as an Alternative News Framing

People often read about news on war or conflict from newspaper. Effect of reading the news often causes a negative effect rather than empathy or sympathy, such as hatred or anger. This effect could lead to revenge or other reactive action which harm other people. Actually, this effect could come up different if the news was framing with alternative news framing. This paper offers alternate news framing for journalist to report news on war or conflict in order to reducing the negative effect and also prevent causing negative effect. Discussion in this paper starts with how mass media can influence and create people’s opinion on many things that happened surround them. Opinions which shaped by printing media are based on how journalist framing the news. One event could be framed differently based on how journalist emphasizes the event and angle of writing the news. Peace Journalism as alternate framing is written in this paper as choice for journalist in order to contribute to create peace in the community. Some news regarding conflict in Indonesia will be analyzed with framing analysis to show how framing news is important to reduce negative effect. In addition, this paper will discuss about the important role of journalist as peace maker. As Maria Hartiningsih, one of senior journalists from Kompas Newspaper said that “every journalist has to contribute peace and justice when they report an event (2001)s. This opinion was also shared by Johan Galtung, Norwegian professor of peace studies. In his opinion, journalist would be more productive if reporters report from the positive or solution point of view rather than focusing on violence (1998). Therefore, this paper will argue that peace journalism is the alternate news framing for journalist in order to take part in creating peace

The Pre-Professional Preparation Project (P-Project) seeks to answer these questions and to report the results via the Visibility Matters report cards. Using only data available from university and college websites, the Visibility Matters report cards evaluate the public face of pre-professional programs across Illinois. An Overview of the New ACM/IEEE Information Technology Curricular Framework

ACM and IEEE have developed a curricular report titled, “Information Technology Curricula 2017: Curriculum Guidelines for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in Information Technology,” known also as IT2017. The development of this report has received worldwide content contributions from industry and academia through surveys as well as many international conferences and workshops. An open online publication of the report was made available in December 2017. This paper presents a digest of the content of the report, the IT curricular framework, and suggestions for its use in developing new information technology programs or enhancing existing ones. The heart of the IT curricular framework is a set of competencies identified through knowledge, skills, and dispositions, as supported by pedagogical research. The paper also describes ways in which institutions could use the curricular framework not only to develop information technology degree programs, but also to improve and enhance related computing programs

The Use of Dry Strength Additives to Improve Curling Resistance in a Sheet of Paper

The purpose of the following report was to look at the possibility of using dry strength resins to help reduce curling tendencies in a sheet of paper. The use of dry strength additives greatly increased the strength characteristics of a sheet of paper. The increase was so great it allowed: substituting softwood fibers with hardwood fibers and/or using a higher freeness and still retain the same strength characteristics. The results of these changes would give a sheet of paper reduced curling tendencies. The changes could also result in power reductions, material savings, and/or improved formation for producing the sheet of paper

Lying about firm performance: Evidence from a survey in Nigeria

It is difficult to be sure that managers in developing countries report financial information accurately and truthfully during firm surveys. The most common concern is that managers might under-report performance to avoid attracting attention from the tax authorities or corrupt bureaucrats. Using a method developed in the literature on corruption, this paper identifies managers who appear to be reticent or deceptive and compares their answers with the answers of non-reticent managers. The paper shows that reticent managers report that their firms are more, not less, productive than non-reticent managers. The paper then assesses possible reasons for this, finding that the most likely explanation is that reticent managers exaggerate performance so that they or their firms look good. Because past studies have found that reticent managers appear to lie about other aspects of firm and manager behavior—including underreporting corruption—this suggests that it will be difficult to fully assess how these behaviors affect firm performance unless reticence is controlled for.Reticence; Nigeria; Firm Surveys; Corruption; Labor Productivity

This is a report on the findings of the dark matter science working group for the white paper on the status and future of TeV gamma-ray astronomy. The white paper was commissioned by the American Physical Society, and the full white paper can be found on astro-ph (arXiv:0810.0444). This detailed section discusses the prospects for dark matter detection with future gamma-ray experiments, and the complementarity of gamma-ray measurements with other indirect, direct or accelerator-based searches. An Analysis of the Majority Report “Responsible Parenthood” and its Recommendations on Abortion, Sterilization and Contraception

This paper will focus on the majority report (titled “Responsible Parenthood”) of the 1966 Papal Birth Control Commission and its recommendations on abortion, sterilization, and contraception.(1) The analysis is made with the hindsight and perspective of thirty-seven years of scientific data on fertility, family planning, and family life. The analysis presented here does not concern the whole document but rather focuses on what are called the “objective criteria” that were provided in the document to help married couples make decisions on the use of contraception. While acknowledging the intellectual abilities and expertise of those who wrote the majority report, the analysis will show that the commission was “near-sighted” in its recommendation for change in the Church’s teaching on contraception. This paper will argue that the commission responsible for writing the majority report was wrong on a number of basic issues. Oddly enough, had Catholic followed the criteria as laid out in the majority report, there would be fewer abortions and sterilizations today among Catholics. Furthermore, in addition to the flawed criteria provided by the Commission, the world-wide dissent with the Church and the shift to a personal or intuitive judgment in determining what is right or wrong had the effect of promoting contraception, abortion and sterilization rather than preventing these immoral practices

Vehicle Accident Alert and Locator (VAAL)

An emergency is a deviation from planned or expected behaviour or a course of event that endangers or adversely affects people, property, or the environment. This paper reports a complete research work in accident (automobile) emergency alert situation. The authors were able to programme a GPS / GSM module incorporating a crash detector to report automatically via the GSM communication platform (using SMS messaging) to the nearest agencies such as police posts, hospitals, fire services etc, giving the exact position of the point where the crash had occurred. This will allow early response and rescue of accident victims; saving lives and properties. The paper reports its experimental results, gives appropriate conclusions and recommendations
